Apollo 11: The Missing Tapes

On July 20th, 1969, 600 million people watched Neil Armstrong step onto the Moon. What they watched was a degraded copy.

The original recording — captured on slow-scan television at three ground stations simultaneously — was higher resolution, higher frame rate, and significantly sharper than anything broadcast that night. It was deposited at the National Archives in 1970. Returned to NASA in 1984. Then erased and reused to save money on magnetic tape.

A GSFC-led internal search, running from 2006 to 2009, reviewed over 200,000 tapes. The originals were not found.
